Job Summary
The successful candidate will be a key player in the design and development of major biomedical research activities.
Job Responsibilities
- Stay current with external factors that might influence the research including legal and regulatory issues, informatics standards development and peer projects
- Specify business requirements and collaborate on functional specifications
- Collaborate with the design and usability team to develop screen mock-ups and functional prototypes
- Participate in the research process whereby new ideas are generated and projects are executed that set the direction for future projects; such projects may include the development of prototypes and structures that demonstrate advanced clinical computing concepts
- Perform research to evaluate the impact of clinical information systems; present and publish these findings as appropriate
- Assist the research team with efforts to author scientific abstracts and poster presentations
- Meet with customers, gather requirements, and document the process to facilitate development
- Works on collaborative projects with centers and institutes at the University of Utah and its partner institutions.
- Other operational functions as requested
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in medical informatics, epidemiology, or a related medical field
- Recent experience interacting with physicians or medical personnel in the development and support of medical applications
- Five years of related experience in a biomedical domain
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical coding standards. (SNOMED, ICD9, CPT, LOINC, HL7, etc.).
- Demonstrated SQL programming skills
- Experience working with a large scale data warehouse
- Ability to perform data management and data manipulation using standard database and statistical analysis tools such as SAS and relational database tools such as MS SQL Server, and Access
- Ability to perform ETL operations using tools such as MS SQL Server SSIS
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and understand epidemiological data
- Demonstrated expertise in epidemiologic algorithm development (BSI, MRSA, Cdiff)
- Knowledge of regulatory issues in medical IT (HIPAA, IRB, etc)
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Ability to interact effectively with management, users, and other programmers
- Excellent business analysis skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a development team
- The ability to effectively manage your time and projects
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and maintaining a large-scale data warehouse
- Four years of experience as a database programmer or manager working with MS SQL Server and SSIS or other database and ETL tools
- Recent experience with developing data dictionaries and other development products
- Experience defining user requirements and developing design documentation and user interfaces.
This position is a full time position. You must be able to work normal business hours, at either the Niche offices or a client site. You must be willing to occasionally work a flexible schedule; there will be instances when you are required to adjust your schedule in order to meet a deadline.
Compensation will be based on the candidate's skills and experience.
