Entry-Level Technical Writer

This position is in Salt Lake City, Utah

No commercial experience is necessary. However, two years of experience is desired. Candidates must have a four-year degree and must have impeccable writing and editing skills. Candidates must also have an aptitude for understanding and explaining technical subjects. Applicants will be required to take a comprehensive writing and editing skills test. Candidates who perform well on the test normally take three to five hours to complete the test.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum BA or BS Degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, or a related field; or BS degree in a technical field with exceptional writing skills
  • Impeccable writing and editing skills, with writing samples that demonstrate these skills
  • The ability to produce publication-quality written material very quickly
  • A demonstrated technical aptitude (apparent in your past experience)
  • Strong research skills
  • Considerable experience researching on the Internet
  • Intermediate level proficiency with computers and in common applications such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, Adobe Acrobat, electronic e-mail, and Web browsers
  • The ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with co-workers
  • A willingness to be edited (without taking feedback personally)
  • The ability to effectively manage your time and projects
  • Honesty, reliability, punctuality

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office or OpenOffice tools
  • Expert level proficiency in Adobe Acrobat (full version) and at least one HTML editor
  • Expert level proficiency in one or more professional publishing or design programs (FrameMaker, InDesign, Quark, Interleaf, etc.)
  • Proficiency in RoboHelp
  • An understanding of computer networking concepts

To perform well in this position you must be organized and detail-oriented, and you must be able to present information in a clear, compelling way. You must have strong grammar skills. You must be able to write in a conversational, yet professional, tone and style. You must be a fast, independent worker who can produce publication-quality on first drafts and effectively manage your workload with minimal supervision.

This position is a full-time position. You must be able to work normal business hours, at either the Niche offices or a client site. You must be willing to occasionally work a flexible schedule; there will be instances when you are required to adjust your schedule in order to meet a deadline.

The starting salary for this position is negotiable, within in the entry-level market range.

Niche also pays additional compensation for all hours worked over 80 in a two-week work period.
